The barn at Watch Hill is estimated to have been built sometime around 1830 near Salsbury Cove in Bar Harbor.

After nearly 200 years the dry-stacked fieldstone foundation is in need of repair.

Although the foundation has settled and soils have built up over time, the frame is still in decent shape despite needing some repairs.

Hydraulic jacks and I-beams are used to lift the building about 5' off the ground.

Hemlock 6x6 pieces are stacked under the I-beams as it is lifted to make 'cribbing' that holds the weight after the jacks lift the building.

The old foundation stone is removed and saved to be reused. The new foundation is excavated down to ledge which is between 1-3' below grade.

Supplemental stone is collected at a nearby abandoned granite quarry. The pieces that were left behind by the original quarrymen are know as tailings.

Using the tripod in a tight spot where machinery can't access to help set larger corner stones as the foundation is rebuilt.

String lines mark the top of the foundation wall where the sill of the building will rest when lowered back down. Notice the small chisel on a string being used as a plumb bob to locate where the corner of the building will land on the foundation.

Working under the barn was a little nerve wracking at first but soon the elevated building above you isn't given a second thought.

The I-beams can be seen protruding from the side of the building.

The foundation is nearly complete and ready for the building to come back down.

Our work is done and the next stage will be lowering the building and completing repairs to the barn frame and siding.

The building is back down before winter and work starts back up in the spring. Only the worst areas of the siding need to be replaced.

The barn renovations are complete and this building has a chance at another 100 years.

Original hewn timbers with live corners in the frame of the building illustrate the resourcefulness and craftsmanship of the builders that came before.

Timber frames are held together with wooden pegs instead of modern fasteners. The many benefits include greater longevity due to reduced condensation and moisture that metal fasters introduce as temperatures fluctuate.

Timber frame repairs made to the building are completed by Sweet Timber Frames and reflect a deep appreciation for traditional craft and natural, local materials.
