About Caleb Fuller Davis
1980—2002
Caleb Davis grew up in Maine, living first on the island of Isleboro then inland in the small town of Wayne. After graduating from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine in 1998 Caleb moved to Mount Desert Island where he received a B.A. in Human Ecology in 2002 from the College of the Atlantic. During this period he lived in Yucatan, Mexico for a winter studying Spanish and agroecology. The program culminated in the participation in ‘U Yits Ka’an’, a small school in rural Mexico dedicated to teaching the skills of Mayan subsistence agriculture (Milpa). Experiencing a living model of a regenerative food system and seeing the importance of knowledge-intensive methods in sustainable horticulture would have a lasting impact on his career.
Upon returning home Caleb spent three years apprenticing at Beech Hill Farm, a four-season vegetable farm. He also started Aunt Betty’s Garden, a small MOFGA certified market garden with his friend, and now accomplished farmer, Daniel Price. During this time he learned about growing regional food crops and the importance of a healthy soil biome for food production and the broader environment. A reverence for soil and a passion for horticulture was born.
2003—2005
In 2003 Caleb took a job with Vernal Acres, a small ecological landscaping firm, learning landscape gardening and drystone wall building. Through both the installation and maintenance of diverse plantings he learned the garden vernacular of the region, characterized by thematic elements of natural stone, native plants and woodland gardens.
2005—2020
Caleb started Davis Stone & Garden in 2005, offering services in landscape installation and garden maintenance with a specialization in sustainable, low input- high impact plantings and drystone features. Working for a range of clients including coastal estates and downtown businesses, DS&G developed a strong reputation and portfolio through successful collaboration with an array of landscape architects and designers. During this time Caleb worked extensively with Sam Wyatt of Studio Roji who would become a lifelong friend and mentor. As design services grew into an increasingly important aspect of the business, a refined naturalistic approach to landscapes formed. Characterized by playful expression and informed by regional ecology, Caleb’s designs are continuously inspired by the physical beauty of coastal Maine and the strong cultural values of resourcefulness, community, and craftsmanship.
